A desert ridge hike above Mexico's most famous beach. Park beneath the foothills a few miles before Balandra (look for the communications pylon), then climb a rocky path through loose, mineral-rich stone studded with fossilized shells and coral to a flat "observatory" beside the pylon, where the turquoise bay and mushroom rock open up below. A lower fork leads instead to a mangrove-backed beach in about 30 minutes.
